"Discipline, self-denial – these are things we not only aspire to – it’s what keeps us alive in conditions like these. "
"We walked past countless steep untracked powder slopes yesterday, shook our heads, and said, ‘Ain’t it a shame.’"
- from the Salt Lake Avalanche Advisory, Saturday, January 28, 2012

Alecs, a splitboarder was killed that day in Big Cottonwood Canyon. http://utahavalanchecenter.org/accident ... ir_1282012

godspeed Alecs.

I think this would have been his last post on the splitboard.com boards:

Did you read about the Taylor slide a little over a week ago SB? I was up on the pass when it went. Taylor was something I wanted to avoid with the snowpack this year on the Teets and there was a whole lot of untracked safer options everywhere around that day.

Quite a thread going on in the TGR forum regarding the tragic fatality on Kessler. http://www.tetongravity.com/forums/show ... -12/page24
The victim also posted in the same thread just before heading out on dawn patrol and obviously making a fateful decision. This was Alec's 2nd to last post, " Intuition is good enough to get you through most days of your life, just don't forget it whilst in search of the EPIC." Quite sobering and just plain sad. Two well-respected forecasters for the Utah Avalanche Center and one of his partners that day also post in the thread. If you can get past the arm chair quarterbacking and typical TGR banter there are impt group dynamic lessons to be learned regarding the red flags and social dynamics that go into making decisions regarding whether a slope is safe to ski, etc.

RA, Glad you got some safer goods. i did read about that avalanche (http://www.tetonat.com/2012/01/24/taylor-mountain-avalanche/) there is some thought provoking stuff to weed out in the first 50 or so comments that I read through; and some crap.

SL, thanks for the Kessler link. Pretty heated stuff with even with an avalanche forecaster/split-board inventor chiming in....
