Winter Season 2016-2017

Postby Kaptain Safe T » December 3rd, 2016, 7:54 am

The Kaptain here just getting things rolling.....off to a good start up on the hill....check out the NWS videos and info on this up coming winter forecasts and prognostications....good wet dense storm cycle produced a good base overall......got out in the slack country just to poke around yesterday.....ski penetration varied from a few inches to staying on top on the wind slab. The upper mountain is holding well but these are early season conditions for sure....lots of logsticles and rocksticles out there ......it appears there was a good blow down on some SW and W facing slopes in the aspen belt....in any case tread gently as they say and "Think Snow" Its good to see all of ya and the good ski energy out there. Thanks for checking in and post up those trips and obs when you can.....Cheers

12/22/16 Surfs up....Wet and dense heavy snow with periods of electrical enhancement. Got a look at the snowpack on a NW aspect at treeline today but had to abort due to the lightning. Looking like winter will arrive shortly with favorable forecast for the Christmas Holiday period.....could do without the wind but stay tuned.....I also did get a ski in the sidecountry down from 11500 to around 10000 SW facing slope. No signs of any naturals but pay attention to this massive loading about to occur. Ski ya on the hill for a Merry White Christmas if all goes well.

January is looking good to set some kind of records....2 to 3 inches of moisture in the QPF forecast....that's some serious winter fresh coming...count them as they fall...This will be quite a bit of SWE on top of our snowpack...expect some reactivity during and right after the storm...90% of all incidents occur within those parameters. Looking forward to a deep January.

Stardate 1-26-17 Well that was a great cycle of storm activity....reports vary but sounds like over 7 feet of snow recorded at 10800'. Mostly a right side up event but lots of wind today causing massive transport and dangerous loading conditions....I believe this was in the top 10 for snow amounts and definetly top 10 for ski and riding quality....its only January bring it on for the rest of the season.

2-13-17 Another warm and wet storm cycle making for excellent side/back country skiing....more like Spring corn at lover elevations....Snowslide snowtel looks like it picked up 10 - 11 inches ? Great skiing in the off piste from 11500 to 10000 ish.....counted a good 83 turns in a row today in the fresh........keep an eye on this weekend, could be a little less dense and cooler temps for sure. come on out to Aspen Sports this Thursday if your around...Intro to Avy Freeeeeeeee
