February Weather

Postby Kaptain Safe T » February 3rd, 2012, 6:43 am

Happy Groundhog day to all.....Feb is starting off much better than January already....Feb,2 2012 new snow 1 inch......snowing all day with accumulations by Feb, 3 2012 of 6 more inches.....Total for Feb already 7 inches at 10,800....Beautiful stallars and some graupel thoughout the day on Thursday. Snow pits dug over the last couple weeks are not pretty but not much snow in the starting zones of the ski area. Mostly faceted snow with layers of rime ice and wind slab. The new snow is very light density snow and no wind for a change. Come get some on ya winter is just starting to get better.

Feb. 12, 2012 Winter continues to arrive 3 inches at a time.....The forecast is indicating unsettled weather most of the week and this will improve things with every pulse....Conditions are better than you might imagine if you haven't been up.....However the backcountry is limited at this time....New sign and beacon check at the Southside gate are ready to go once the snow falls and settles......Hug a Snowcat operator for V-Day.

Hey El Kapitan, what methods/instruments are you using to measure accumulation?

I'm trying to get a record of snowfall this season in addition to the SNOTEL site.

I hope these storms come through!

Looking good on V day 2-14-12 another 6 inches at the 10,800 foot Midway survey...14" so far from this cycle.....All measurements are made at storm boards and interval boards at several specific locations.....There are 5 survey locations used so verification of snowfall can be as accurate at possible.... 2 surveys at 9500 'and one each at 9900', 10000', 10800'. The surveys are read by the Snowcat drivers early morning to be reported on the website and during the day by me or other designated Patrollers during a storm cycle. Each Survey has a Total Snowfall Stake as well....remember these are undisturbed settled base measurements that may be affected by wind occasionally. Densities have to be taken by portable guages and Temp Wind and Speed are off the Data Loggers on top.

2-17-12 TGIF...Wrap around moisture all day yesterday with a brisk Easterly wind made for a very winter like day.....No significant accumuation but a fresh look to the hill all day long. Conditions are the best they have been all year and terrain is starting to open up. Its still a wee bit thin out there so be extra careful if you go off piste..Looks like another shot at snow on Sunday....Prez Weekend coming up Hail the Chief

It looks like something might come in on Monday and Tuesday. I was up at the Bowl on Monday and it was actually really good. The bc unfortunately though does not look so great. The contrast between quality of conditions from the area to other parts of the mountain this year is odd to say the least. I guess back in the 30's they really picked out the best spot to put a ski area.

I bet the IB is skiing good - I found good tree skiing the first week of February.
40" at 9700 feet according to snotel today.
The only problem is getting in and out. But if ya go for 2 days it is no problem and can be quite pleasant.
I can stand most weather and stay for 2 days with this setup...
Image

All this in a 32 liter blackdiamond outlaw pack.
-floor-less/pole-less tepee tent strapped on side of bag
-20 and 32 deg. F. bags, compressed and strapped to lower section of pack (it hangs down and hits my but)
-titanium alcohol stove that fits in 15oz cup.
-100oz insulated water bladder
-20oz fuel bottle
-dehydrated food
-ridge-rest
-skins strapped into front binding (in a better snow year, skins and board would be under feet from the start...)
-snow safety and science gear

Bags, tent and stove remain at camp so much touring is done with normal BC setup....
Troy Marino is a splitboarder and on the KPAC board of directors.

Indeed.....2-28-12....by 2:00 pm storm totals were 8 to 14 inches of new snow with 26 to 50 inches of undisturbed settled base.....best skiing so far this year....density around 7% to 8% making for nice cover. New snow bonding well to old snow....still poor structure in the pack but little to no energy....The side country is getting better but you still have to tip toe over to it.....not much wind yesterday but its coming on Friday...Yikes. Happy Leap year to all.
