Who's getting Stoked?!?

Postby raisingarizona » October 4th, 2011, 7:22 pm

It's starting to feel like fall around here and man I'm getting all fired up. La Nina? Meh. I don't want to get all crazy with predictions and jinx us so I'm going to shut up now but getting stoked none the less. What say you?

I'm with you. :) Enjoying the break in the heat. Last year's first fall storm was Oct 22 (4"), I think this one coming in over 2 weeks early is a good sign.

Photo gallery at AZSB is lacking.. They posted the crop dusting from Tuesday as a photo of the Peaks, and then when the 4" pretty inches come in, instead of the Peaks they show a stand of aspens on the side of Hart Prairie. Not cutting it. :)

Here is a quick shot of Flag local Paige Heller riding out a slide in the Jackson back country from about ten years ago. She did stand up and ski right out of this one.

I'm getting stoked. I'm feeling it.

Looks like a good first shot Fri/Sat with another weaker trough Sun/Mon. The long-range GFS is advertising another storm late next week, which is a ways out but at this point looks juicy.

With luck, first turns next weekend.

Willy, I hope you're right. I'd rather not drive to CO. to get on snow.

Actually, I am too. And that now looks remotely possible as the Sun/Mon storm is looking much better than it did a day ago.

Colorado got it going early this year.. hopefully AZ does too. Definitely looks like a good pattern setting up, hopefully stays long enough for 3 or 4 storms.. late next week is still on the forecast. Sure would be nice to see the lifts spinning before Dec 1st. :)

I haven't been here long.. what's the average opening day for AZSB? I think it's been within a week of Christmas for the past 3-4 years..

Right, sorry to bring up the lifts. We know, you're core. Lifts are stupid.

It's okay, no worries.

Snowslide Snotel is reporting 6" with 1.8" snow water equiv. That's a nice heavy coat - good way to start things out. Snowbowl reporting 10-12".

That's weird.. The obs page from NOAA shows Snowslide Canyon hit 12"..

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/mesowest/getobe ... banner=off

also looks like it jumped from 3" to 12" from 2-3am. Nice.

another 6-8" reported by AZSB, up to 20" total.. with Snowslide up to 15" total, 5 new. Storm is actually staying put and should put down at least a couple more inches tonight. Good storms..

edit: final totals.. azsb 20-28", Snowslide hit 21" and has settled(?) down to 18". With this next system coming in.. could AZSB open before Thanksgiving? I'm sure even Willy would be thankful for that.

So who's gonna post the first rock ski/board shralping stoke? :)

Well here's the first stoke. Sorry no action shots.
There is good coverage almost everywhere. Roughly 15" going up Agassiz, and maybe 24" in the protected side, skiers left of Blackjack. The top snow from overnight was almost blower, the snow lower down that came in Saturday morning is starting to consolidate to be supportable. Ski or ride, lightly, there are definitely obstacles, seen and unseen. There's a good skin track going up Agassiz and up Phoenix to the top of Blackjack. Did two runs, there was a group of 4 behind me so it kinda looks gang skied.

Looking up to Temptations bowl,

My freshies on Blackjack,

Looking back down the skinner down Agassiz,

As far as stability, no collapsing was heard. Snowbowl was running a cat up the canyon runs for some reason, so there is a nice firm track going up higher if you wanna get up higher to ski/ride.

Get some!

Here's a few pics,
