Re: North Doyle Peak - Dec 30 2013

Nice! Has a 30 inch pack ever skied so good? I can't remember having this much fun with such a thin base ever!

Re: Fatal slide in Jackson today

This whole thing has me wondering, does an official Moderate X rating make sense for these kinds of conditions?

Re: Some observations from this weeks ski tours

Thanks David. After more touring this week I feel I may have been wrong saying that it's not full on continental style right now. I'm thinking that we may be experiencing a very stereotypical December/January continental like snowpack. Some zones are so rotted it's scary to imagine 1+ feet of new sl...

Fatal slide in Jackson today

Big scary slide just outside of the Village today. 29 year old male snowboarder unfortunately did not make it. http://www.earlyups.com/news/avalanche-pucker-face-jhmr/?fb_action_ids=10151910890288335&fb_action_types=og.likes&fb_ref=.UrzQIFXpJsw.like&fb_source=other_multiline&action_o...

Some observations from this weeks ski tours

Well things are interesting out there. Myself and a buddy of mine climbed up the Agassiz ridge to the summit on Saturday (or maybe it was Sunday?) to look around. The wind was brutal! 100 mph gusts I imagine, it was a minnie epic death march to the top and we barely avoided frost bite. Once on the s...

Re: Coming down from Colorado, where to ski over Christmas

Unless we get a good storm you might want to bring your bike. It just got warm, like really warm. Sedona is so good right now!

Re: Some Pit data from Dec 11 and 12, 2013

Complacency can be a dangerous thing, I feel a bit stupid for not taking the snow pack more seriously. It has been cold, really cold and it's thin so some continental like behavior is very possible, hopefully it gets warm for the next week or so before we get another storm.

Re: Some Pit data from Dec 11 and 12, 2013

S/SE facing at around 11k to maybe 11,500 I'm guessing. We were on practically flat ground putting our skins on when we heard/felt the whoomph. It's my second whoomph in 12 years of skiing the Peaks, it wasn't cool and it put me on edge for a little while.

Re: Some Pit data from Dec 11 and 12, 2013

Is there an accessible decoder for pit results on this site? I would appreciate one if not, I'm ok at back country skiing but not so good at reading the pit results, sorry for being uneducated but a decoder could help us learn for sure. Thanks for your postings! Edit, I just found one of my books so...

Re: Some Pit data from Dec 11 and 12, 2013

It actually does exist. We skied off of the south side of Core Ridge with incredible conditions the other day and had a huge whoomph under us once we stopped below the powder pitch, there was probably about 3 feet of snow, maybe 4, it was a bit unnerving to say the least. I thought it may be from ge...

Re: Uphill traffic at Snowbowl.

I think we are at an interesting point with uphill traffic at the Bowl. The ski area is trying to work on doing their best to get terrain open and running a business but there a lot of people trying to just get some exercise and get a skin lap in, I don't believe that most of them are serious back c...

Re: Uphill traffic at Snowbowl.

It is unfortunately the only place to ski as of right now... As far as back country skiing is concerned there isn't a lot to be had right now or at least anything of quality. Ullr! http://hercareerstory.files.wordpress.com/2013/06/expand-your-horizons.jpg I think we may have different ideas on what...

Re: Some observations from Dec,05 2013

I believe I have heard BJ call this spacial variation before and it's typical of the pack here on the peaks. I usually try to feel these weak points out and the stronger areas then visualize the pack as a whole over a larger area, almost like a "study plot". This of course is a learned fee...

Re: Uphill traffic at Snowbowl.

This makes sense, I know you guys are trying to get a lot done and we appreciate that. The powder starved Arizona skiing community is chomping at the bit and ready to get after it so the sooner the upper mountain can be opened the better really. It is unfortunately the only place to ski as of right ...
