Hiking up Feb 2018

The Snowbowl website indicates that hiking up is still not permitted inbounds, which is remarkable given the date. As such, I skinned up near the ski area boundary along the Southside border and there is sufficient coverage from bottom to top. The snow depths varied between 6-24" the entire way...

Uphill route on Southside

An uphill path through the trees on the Southside of the ski area boundary has been tagged with orange marking tape on the trees. For those who would like to travel uphill when the resort is open, the route starts at the lower parking lot and goes to the gate by the ski patrol hut at the top. The ch...

Test pit by Humphries saddle

Skied nice lines on upper Sundance on edge of trees and then later on shoulder of upper Dutchman's heading over and down into the side of Rustler. Between the runs, dug a pit just off to the side of the Humphries saddle on top of a 35 degree slope heading down into inner basin. One test area had som...

Re: Setting a skin track on Southside

For those who are interested in having a more direct route to to the gate at the top of the Agassiz lift, it is fairly straightforward to skin up just a short distance in from the trees along the SE border. The only place that gets treed and rocked out is the area that runs next to ridge between wat...

Re: Setting a skin track on Southside

A track has been set. It runs up from the Kachina trail around the rocks, cliffs, and downed trees. The goals in setting the path were to stay out of the known slide path along gully one (seven meadows) as much as possible, to avoid scrambling over rocks and trees, and to pick a pretty line through ...

Setting a skin track on Southside

I've been looking at the possibility of setting a marked skin track outside of the Southeastern boundary of the ski area. Once the snow fills in, Dutchman's provides the most straightforward way up the mountain to access the skiing around Allison Clay and the Inner Basin. At this point, however, Dut...

Re: Early Season Conditions - Don't be caught off guard

Fracture lines observed on the afternoon of Dec 3 running 100 feet up the upper portion of Casino directly from from the skin track heading from Midway to Ridge. Given the soft conditions, the snow below the main line formed a sluff that moved only a foot or so. Good reminder of what might happen on...

Observations and Pit at Humphries Saddle

From Humphrey/Agassiz Saddle, the inner basin looks quite attractive at 3:50 on 1/1/2011. No cornices or other obvious signs of heavy wind loading on E slopes. Could see three sets of tracks on the N side of the Cirque. The tracks cut further to the N half way down and headed down the E side of Hump...
